We're here to help support and maintain a sustainable ecosystem of funding for free and open source projects and contributors, especially Bitcoin related projects and projects which help Bitcoin flourish.

  • OpenSats is committed to funding Bitcoin as well as these technologies on the periphery including scaling technologies, secure communication protocols, self-custody solutions, second-layer tech, educational resources, research and design contributors, etc.

Free and open source Bitcoin projects as well as related free and open source projects which help Bitcoin flourish and reach its fullest potential may apply to be listed on the Open Sats website by submitting an application.

Bitcoin projects and free and open source contributors may also apply for grants from our general fund by submitting an application.

We think there's a major free rider problem in the free and open source contributor space and hope that funding those who give back will improve the tech and talent in the space long term. Our platform aims to connect donors to free and open source contributors by enabling anyone to explore our catalog of board reviewed and vetted projects and suggest donations go to the projects of their choice or to a general fund which will distribute grants on a quarterly basis to qualifying and vetted grant applicants.

OpenSats is committed to providing a platform with no fees and 100% passthrough of all donations to projects and the general fund made via our platform.

OpenSats will accept bitcoin and fiat donations. All fiat donations will be converted to bitcoin and all grants will given to FOSS projects and grant recipients in bitcoin. Our banking, exchange, and donor partners have allowed us to ensure that we give every cent or sat donated to free and open source contributors.

No donations will be used by the organization unless the donor SPECIFICALLY donates to our operational fund, which can be done using this link. These funds will be used to cover our general operational expenses like legal, accounting, and payment processing fees, as well as to pay the salary of our managing director. So far these operational expenses have been covered by a few generous donors and we hope to continue to find donors to cover these costs so we can ensure 100% passthrough of platform donations to Bitcoin and free and open source contributors.

Nobody in the organization makes any money from donor funds which aren't specifically earmarked for OpenSats' operations. OpenSats is committed to being transparent about incoming and outgoing project related donations as well as any operational donors as we move forward.

  • Projects will be listed on Open Sats website upon a simple (5-4) majority approval by the board. The board will consider donor suggestions for project specific donations, however, the board will retain full control and final authority over where funds are allocated.

  • Grants allocated from the general fund will be determined by a simple (5-4) majority approval by the board.
